The Health effects of curcumin

According to a study published by the University of California, Los Angeles, on January 19 in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, daily consumption of some form of curcumin may improve the symptoms of mild and age-related memory loss. Memory and emotions.

The researchers examined the effect of an easily absorbed curcumin supplement on memory in patients without dementia and the potential effects of curcumin on microscopic plaques and tangles in the brain of Alzheimer's patients.

In turmeric, curcumin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties in laboratory studies. It has also been suggested that the incidence of Alzheimer's disease in older Indians with curcumin as a dietary diet is low and cognitive abilities are better.

Dr. Gary Small, Department of Geriatric Psychiatry, Seymour Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the first author of the study, said: “How does curcumin work? The effect is uncertain, but it may be due to its ability to reduce brain inflammation, which is related to Alzheimer's disease and severe depression."

This double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 40 adults with mild memory impairment aged 50 to 90 years. Participants were randomly assigned to receive placebo or 90 mg curcumin twice daily for 18 months.

All 40 subjects received a standardized cognitive assessment at the start of the study and every six months, and monitored their blood curcumin levels at the start of the study and after 18 months. Thirty volunteers underwent positron emission tomography or PET scans to determine the level of amyloid and tau in the brain at the start of the study and after 18 months.

Dr. Small said that the memory and attention of people taking curcumin had been significantly improved, and those who received placebo did not. In the memory test, the number of people taking curcumin increased by 28% within 18 months. The mood of those taking curcumin also improved slightly, and their brain PET scans showed significantly lower amyloid and tau signaling in the amygdala and hypothalamus than those taking placebo.

The amygdala and hypothalamus are areas of the brain that control some memory and emotional functions.

Researchers plan to conduct follow-up studies with more people. The study will include some patients with mild depression, so scientists can explore whether curcumin also has antidepressant effects. Larger samples can also allow them to analyze whether the memory-enhancing effects of curcumin vary depending on the degree of genetic risk, age, or cognitive problems in Alzheimer's disease.

"These results show that taking this relatively safe curcumin can provide years of meaningful cognitive benefits," said Dr. Small, a professor of aging at Parlow-Solomon at the University of California, Los Angeles.
